Water Polo Success

Congratulations to the Wentworth College Years 7/8 Water Polo team for placing second in the Term 2 Hibiscus Coast Water Polo Tournaments. After strong competition, the Wentworth College team has emerged with impressive results. The Years 7/8 team placed second in their league, despite forfeiting a game that fell in the holidays. This team has played consistently well, winning almost every match, and has proved to be a tour de force in the water.

Our older players, Years 9 and above, have taken on both students and adults in the Fast 5 competition. This is a non-stop version of Water Polo so, in addition to being strong swimmers, players have needed excellent attack and defence skills in order to respond quickly and effectively to the play. Our team has gone from strength to strength with an outstanding passing game, which has seen every member playing their part. As a result, the Wentworth Fast 5 team beat tough competition to win their league. Congratulations to all our Wentworth College players.

Trip to Wellington

Last week the Years 12 and 13 Economics and Business Studies classes went on a school trip to Wellington. They were there for three very busy but fantastic days. While they were at Parliament they were able to watch Simon Bridges and Jacinda Ardern during Question Time. The students visited several government buildings including Treasury, the Beehive, the Reserve Bank and the Supreme Court. At the Supreme Court they had a full tour which included learning how the building was built as well as a visit to the courtrooms and the cells. The students also visited some well known companies such as Trade Me, Xero and the Weta Cave.

Beach Cleaning and Whitebait Counting

In Global Perspectives this Term the Year 8 students are learning about Water Matters – globally, nationally and locally.

Last week the Year 8 students helped complete a habitat assessment and water quality tests of the Stanmore Bay Stream under the guidance of Sarah Dimitrijevic from the Whitebait Connection. The results are being used in the 2019 Hibiscus and Bays Inanga/whitebait spawning project which is funded by a grant from the Hibiscus and Bays Local Board. It was an excellent opportunity for students to have a real-life, hands-on field work experience and begin to understand how human actions impact on our local environment and the species that live there.

The students also did a beach clean up competition to see which House could find the most litter with a focus on looking closely for microplastics, small plastic pieces less than five millimeters long which can be harmful to our ocean and aquatic life. In one hour each House nearly filled three icecream containers – an excellent effort.

Wentworth College Music Festival

The 2019 Wentworth Music Festival was a great success last week. It was wonderful to see that all the Years 7 – 9 students were involved in class bands. From ukuleles to recorders, keyboards, violins, bongos and congas, every student performed confidently as part of their group.

Our soloists ranged from string players to pianists, drummers and saxophone players, as well as the beautiful voices of our singers. Between them they covered a wide range of genres from modern Popular Music to Jazz and Classical styles.

One main feature of our Music festivals is our Orchestra, which opened both evenings with an original arrangement and a cover of ‘A Million Dreams’ from the Greatest Showman.

A unique feature this year was the showcasing of songs from our forthcoming school Musical ‘Journey Through the Heart of the Library’ which were sung by the soloists who will perform on stage next term. A special mention to the song ‘Stabby Stabby’ which had the audience joining in!

Students create a giant human periodic table

Wentworth Students created a giant human periodic table this week to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the first variant of the periodic table being produced. It was just one of the many activities that took place during Science Week at the College.

In the Education Perfect Science World Championships, Wentworth College students collectively answered over 100,000 questions, placing us 10th of all schools in New Zealand and around 30th globally – a phenomenal effort for such a small school.

Congratulations to Jack Austin and Brendan MacLeod for attaining the Emerald Award for clocking up over 5000 points. Gold Awards were attained by Ella Young, Amy Carstairs, Luis Vallejo-Mohl, Emma Gilpin, Joy Renolds, Paul Berns and Alexis Besson-Mackain. Blake Wood claimed a Silver, and a further 19 students gained a Bronze or Credit award.

Wentworth Netball Success

The netball teams of Wentworth College have got off to a good start this winter season. This year, the school is fielding a total of six netball teams, playing at North Harbour and the Hibiscus Coast.

Three teams are playing on a Saturday morning at North Harbour, under the coaching and management of Megan McKenzie and Mandy Houseman.

The first four weeks of play were grading games and Team 1 Blue won them all. Their best win was against Northcote 3 with a score of 42-19 and their toughest game was against Carmel 4, winning 33-26. After their impressive playing during grading, this team has moved up from playing in Grade 6 to Grade 4.

Team 2 Maroon has also done well in their grading games, winning three out of their four games. The team’s best win was against Waiheke 2 with a score of 27-4. This team will be playing in Grade 7.

Team 3 White has had a mixture of wins and losses during grading and the team’s performance has improved as the weeks have gone on. In the last game of grading, the team beat Northcote 6 with an impressive score of 20-6. This team will be playing in Grade 11. This team has already suffered a number of injuries early in the season and players from the Year 8 team, Sammi Ryan and Sion Jung, have stepped in to help out.

After a busy morning of netball on the North Shore, a mixed team of players are also playing at HBC Netball in the afternoon. This team has had a mixture of wins and losses so far this season.

The Year 8 team is playing on a Thursday evening at North Harbour, with Lyndal Kelly as coach and Dee Ryan as manager. This team has had a great start to the season, winning all its grading games. Their best performance was against Takapuna Normal Intermediate School, with a winning score of 20-6. After the great efforts during grading, the team was moved up into Grade 2. Phoebe Andrew has been umpiring their games.

The Year 7/8 team has been playing at HBC Netball on a Saturday morning, coached by Arwen Hulsbosch and Emma Gilpin, with Stacey Donovan as manager. Some of the players are new to netball and their skills are improving as the weeks progress. Capri Partridge has been umpiring the games.

Well done and thankyou to all the coaches, managers and umpires for the time they have put in to assist our teams, as well as the parents for their support each week on the side lines.

Wentworth netball players train with Northern Mystics team

On Tuesday, the Year 9 netball players attended a Northern Mystics skills and drills session at Netball North Harbour, organised by Fuji Xerox. The event involved a number of other local schools and the girls were split into groups to work on their shooting, passing and catching skills. The girls got to meet four of the Northern Mystics team – Elisapeta Toeava, Emma Iversen, Tayla Earle and Erena Mikaera and it was an inspiring experience for the girls.

Sailing – Term 1 Regatta News

The Wentworth Sailing Teams have had an exciting Term 1 so far. Here is a round up from some of the season’s regattas and training activities.

Auckland Secondary School Regatta – by Cailen Rochford, Year 10

This was a two day regatta against Auckland Schools from Wakatere Boating Club on 4th & 5th March. Eight students from Wentworth College competed in Starlings and Open Bic’s. Sailors had tough racing at this regatta with extremely shifty winds and a high level of competition. We had very satisfying results with Sean Herbert (Year 13) winning the Starling class and Soren Johnston winning the Open Bic class. Imogen Herbert (Year 9) came 3rd and Jack Hollands (Year 7) came 4th.

Bay of Island Interschools Regatta – by Matthew Rist, Year 10

On the 9th & 10th of March, Nine Wentworth College and Primary Students competed in the Bay of Islands Interschool Sailing regatta. Students sailed out from Paihia. The conditions were at times challenging especially when a big rain squall came through and caused major shifts in the breeze and meant the start of some races were postponed. We sailed in double-handed and single-handed boats and collectively were very successful.

420 Team Racing

The 420 race squad are training for the North of the Bridge and South of the Bridge regatta which take place during NZ Tournament week. You will see them at Manly Bay on Monday evenings with the fluorescent green sails. They have also been working hard on the tactical side of team racing during Monday lunchtimes to ensure they are able to put into play their method on the water.

Teams Racing Regattas – by Blake Wood, Year 11

Wentworth students have been training every Monday in preparation for three teams racing regattas in March and April. Most of the students had little to no teams racing experience but with the help of our coach Greg Dair, have developed skills to a level that will be competitive in the Nationals in April. The team have been training at Manly Sailing Club, an ideal venue to further develop our racing skills.

Monday Night Sailing – by Caroline Gilpin, Year 9

At Sailing we learn all the basics like tacking and jibing. We have helmed Hobie Cats and Feva’s. So far the weather has been amazing- blue skies every week. There are 8 of us in our group.

Wentworth Gymnasts Gold & Silver at AIMS!

Our Year 7 and 8 Wentworth gymnasts travelled to Tauranga last week for the AIMS Games Rhythmic Gymnastics competition and won a total of nine medals.

In the Twisters competition (for Novice and Club Level 1-3 gymnasts), the team of Sophia Gardiner, Teresa Sell and Natalie Brewer won Gold medals. All three gymnasts also took top placings individually with Sophia winning Gold, Teresa winning Silver and Natalie taking Bronze.

In the Flyers competition (for Novice gymnasts), the team of Imogen Herbert, Charlotte Sancto-Jones and Bethany Smith won Silver medals. Their individual placings were Imogen 4th, Charlotte 5th and Bethany 6th.

A huge “thank you!” to coaches Kate Heard and Claire Wiggin for all their expertise and the time they have put into coaching the girls.

These were amazing results from our gymnasts – well done girls!

Wentworth Gymnasts win Gold and Silver medals at the Auckland Gymsports Championships

On Thursday, 28th June, 10 Wentworth students took part in a rhythmic gymnastics competition in Takanini and came away with outstanding results.

In the Years 9 and 10 Group Competition, the team of Bronte Heath, Emma Gilpin, Alex Dobson and Caitlin Smith won Gold.

Our Junior team of Natalie Brewer, Teresa Sell, Imogen Herbert, Bethany Smith, Charlotte Sancto-Jones and Stephanie Ye won Silver, which is an amazing achievement for a group of Year 7 & 8 students.

In the Novice Open Individual Grade, Wentworth took all top placings, with Emma Gilpin winning Gold, Caitlin Smith winning Silver and Alex Dobson taking the Bronze.

The others students also did well, with Natalie Brewer in 4th place and Bethany Smith in 6th. Teresa Sell and Imogen Herbert were placed 8th and 9th respectively.

These were amazing results for our gymnasts – well done girls!

All gymnasts have qualified to attend the New Zealand Secondary Schools Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships in September this year.
